 Our Doulas

Doulas in the Willow Birth Network believe Birth and Motherhood is sacred that all moms and babies are unique and valuable, and deserve the best birth experience possible, regardless of age, ethnicity, religion, family structure or financial situation.

Many Doulas offer their services on a sliding scale at reduced rates and can discuss their policies with you personally.   Please contact and interview several Doulas to find the right fit for you.

Serving the Portland Metro area

I am native Oregonian, happy wife and busy mother of two.  My son was born in hospital when I was young and single, and feeling pretty lost.    Ten years later, my daughter was born with an incredibly healing and empowering home water birth with a midwife. So, you could say I have experienced those two ends of the spectrum.  Looking back, I know that if I'd had a Doula during my pregnancy and at the birth of my son, and in the days postpartum for guidance and support, it would have made a world of difference.

I believe that the experiences of pregnancy and birth can really flavor and influence your confidence in parenthood and your relationship with your child and how your family adjusts.  In order to make the choices that are really right for you and your family, you have to first *know* what those choices are.   So you can make the best possible decisions for you, I want to make sure you know all of your options.

Along the way of my life, I have followed a wandering path of discovery and growth that has deepened my fascination with the wonder of birth, as a sacred and magical rite of passage and transformation in life.  I believe every woman deserves a chance to trust her instincts, and to birth as free from fear as possible.

In 1999, while attending Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, I did some volunteer work for Barbara Harper (author Gentle Birth Choices) at Global Child Maternal Health in Wilsonville, helping to prepare for the first International Water birth Conference.  After that experience, and attending the conference, I knew that water birth was for me!  In 2001, I found I was pregnant with my daughter and my studies at OCOM were put on what became a permanent hold when she was born.  I knew I would never finish my work there, as my heart was ever being pulled toward birth work.

I completed my Doula Training through Birth Arts International in April, 2007, and I'm currently working my way towards Doula certification as well as midwifery studies via Ancient Art Midwifery Institute.  I provide both Birth/Labor Doulas services as well as Postpartum Doula Services.

All my life I have been fascinated by the pregnancy and birth experience.  As a child I wanted very badly to be a "baby doctor" and even began work as a medical assistant  (I received my certificate in Medical Assisting in March 1995 from Glendale Career College) to acquaint myself with the medical profession.  Unfortunately, financial concerns forced me to quit medical assisting in 1998, and I entered the corporate world.  Although I feel that I have done much good in my near decade as a Legal Assistant, and continue to do pro bono and low income work through my current employer, I have returned to my passion, which is helping mothers and their babies.  I'm also a notary public, so if anyone needs anything (statement of paternity, advance health care directive, etc...) notarized, I can help with that as well.

In January 2003, I gave birth to my only child, my son Maxwell.  This was a profound experience for me, not only because I had a child, but because the birth and the period immediately afterward.

Despite the fact that I considered myself to be very educated (I had gone to all the classes and spoken frequently with my OB GYN), I felt overwhelmed and unprepared during the birth and immediately afterward.  I remember wishing that I had someone I could talk to who could give me information and support.  A couple of years later I found out about the Doula Profession  and I knew that this was the career for me!

I have just completed Doula training through Birth Arts International (April 1, 2007) and look forward to helping women find their own power through birth and pregnancy, as well as providing respite care afterwards.

For low income women, I am WIC Online Training certified and am more than happy to attend WIC meetings or help you navigate through the WIC and/or Food Stamp application process.
